Word Sketch Difference

Word Sketch Difference allows you to clearly see the difference in the use and meaning of words, especially of close synonyms, antonyms, and words from the same semantic domain.

This functionality is available in the Main, Educational, Media, “From 2 to 15”‎ and “Russian classics”‎‎ corpora.

Word Sketch Difference is available only to authorized users.

Add to comparison

Word Sketch Difference is available for nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs in all corpora that have Sketches in the Word at a glance.

On the Word at a glance page authorized users can see an Add to comparison button. You can compare two lemmas of the same part of speech.

Once the limit on the number of queries has been reached, the Add to comparison button will become inactive. To add another query, you can remove one of the previously added queries from the comparison.

For words that occur less than 3 times in 3 different texts, as well as for proper names, toponyms, abbreviations, and words with non-standard spellings, sketches are not displayed and word sketch difference is not available.

Compare sketches

As soon as at two queries are added to the comparison in the Word at a glance of the selected corpus, the Compare queries button will appear on the search page.

For comparison, the top 6 collocations for each key are selected. There may be less than 12 collocations in the comparison table if there are less than 6 collocations for one or both keys, or there are intersections in the top 6.

On the sketch comparison page, you can see a legend and several tables. The legend indicates the number of occurrences of each word in the selected corpus and the boundaries of the intervals used for color coding the strength of the key and collocation connection.

The first lemma is assigned a blue color, the second lemma is orange. Accordingly, the collocates of the first lemma are highlighted in blue, and the collocates of the second lemma are highlighted in orange. The collocates are arranged in descending order of the strength of the connection between the words, that is, the difference between the logDice of the first and second lemmas, taking into account the sign. The shade of the color indicates the difference between the logDice of the first word with a collocation and the logDice of the second word with the same collocation. The greater the difference, the richer the color and the stronger the connection with the key. Colorless collocations are equally common with both lemmas.

The second and third columns of the table indicate the number of occurrences of a collocation with a specific lemma. By clicking on the number of occurrences, you can view the sketch examples in the case.

The fourth and fifth columns of the table indicate the logDice of the key and the collocation.
